Relationships Over Returns: Insights from a Financial Advisor

This might sound like I'm answering an interview question that hasn't even been asked, but every now and then I like to reflect on what I've done and how it is going, and I recently considered my highlights to date as a financial advisor. When I dug deep and thought about it, the highlights were all relationship based so here they are

• Having a client text me 15 minutes before surgery to ask me to check if I’ve get everything I need to take care of financial arrangements for his family if anything should happen. It sort of made me cry...just a little bit.

• Getting families mortgages approved especially when they have difficult cases. I recall pulling over to the side of the road to check if the message I was sweating on had come through, and then calling clients at once to tell them the good news and hearing the elation through the phone. I felt as if it was my home.

• Being a team member for some families and inside the circle of trust. I just get a kick out of it. Skyping at 10pm and later when property deadlines are looking and the feeling of working together to get a property purchase sorted.

• Helping clients to become free from workplace bullying by making the financial decisions that were right for them that took the power out of the hands of the bullies

I'm sure through all of these relationships I have had some income but the memories and the friendships have been a lot more important and enduring
